Bonsai tree help ?

i have a dwarf chinese ficus bonsai tree and there are a few roots coming out through the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot. They are pretty big and huge but the bonsai store owner said I could just leave them of snip them off if I wanted. what sounds better, and if i cut them how exactly should i do that ?!?
