How hypocritical is political fundraising?

On the news this morning I heard dollar figures that all the presidential candidates have raised for campaigning. Doesn't it seem rather hypocritical to raise money to spend on advertising oneself when we have people in our country starving, no health or dental insurance, inadequate housing and education, etc?
