I am writing na essay on the catcher in the rye... i need help!!!!?

i am writing on the 'phoniness' in the catcher in the rye. My teacher says i need to explain more about the phoniness of contemporary america at that time (e.g consumerism,patriachy, military) i really don't understand how to link it with Holden's perception of phoniness!!!! Any suggestions?
